The synthesis of silica gel from Salacca edulis Reinw stem with hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid as gelation agents has been investigated.
Silica gel was prepared by dissolving Salacca edulis Reinw stem ash with sodium hydroxide at 100 for 30 minutes to form sodium silicate. Gel formation was carried out by adding hydrochloric acid at various concentration 2, 4 and 6 m and sulfuric acid at various concentration 2, 4 and 6 m. The formed gel was washed with water and dried at 50 C for 18 hours. Silica gel was analyzed by XRD, FTIR and Surface Area Analyzer.
Analysis result showed that XRD data indicate formation amorphous structure of silica gel. From FTIR data showed existence of silanol and siloxane groups of silica gel for different gelation agents. Surface area, total pore volume and pore diameter average were 2,983 m2/g, 0,005 cc/g and 15,172 Ǻ for hydrochloric acid agents. For sulfuric acid agents were 4,184 m2/g, 0,010 cc/g and 59,217 Ǻ for surface area, total pore volume and pore diameter average. It was conclude that silica gel had micropore, mesopore and macropore with dominant fraction at mesopore size.
