The presented studies concern high temperature resistant coatings known as thermal barrier coatings (TBC). This type of coatings containing as essential components ceramic layers based on Al2O3 and ZrO2 deposited by plasma spraying technology have numerous applications among others in heat and gaseous turbines, aircraft an high compression engines.

Phase composition and microstructure are studied by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. Coatings show polycrystalline structure with some local fluctuations of chemical and phase composition in nanoareas.
