Graphene is novel material with outstanding physical properties. In HTF-NIAGRA new products and processes related to passivating coatings, composites and conducting ink are developed in collaboration with Danish companies.

DTU Nanotech conducts cross-disciplinary research where micro- and nanotechnology is applied to a wide range of scientific disciplines (electronics, mechanics, chemistry, optics, fluidics, medical and biotechnology) as well as applications. DTU Nanotech relies heavily on the two state-of-the-art facilities, DTU Danchip (1300 m2 cleanroom) and DTU CEN – Center for Electron Nanoscopy. The graphene cluster at DTU Nanotech is rapidly growing with activities oriented towards basic and applied research, experimental, industrial and theoretical research alike. DTU hosts the Center of Excellence CNG (Center of Nanostructured Graphene) with 30+ researchers and students covering both fabrication, measurement and theory of graphene devices.

Description

Responsibilities and tasks
DTU Nanotech wishes to employ:

A postdoctoral researcher for 2 years, to perform research in the field of abrasion and corrosion protection of realistic stainless steel surfaces (impure, three-dimensional/rough), to develop durable, stable, impermeable, corrosion-protective graphene-based coatings. An important part of the job is to develop realistic test strategies to validate coatings, and to optimize the coating process. Another is to gain a deeper understanding of the parameters that determine the performance in terms of corrosion resistance, adhesion and robustness. This work will be in close contact with other Danish academic and industrial partners, and the candidate will be a key person in maintaining a strong collaboration with these. The job involves supervision of at least 2 Ph.D. students, and requires experience with supervision or mentoring.

A PhD student for 3 years. The objective is to study and optimize growth of graphene, graphene-like and graphene-based coatings, including composition, preparation of catalyst metals and alloys, growth mechanisms (depending on growth conditions, source gases and catalyst materials) as well as investigation of coating integrity and protective function as depending on catalyst material, roughness and environmental conditions (pressure, temperature, wear, chemistry/harshness).

Qualifications
Candidates for the Postdoc position should have a PhD in engineering, physics or chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:

• Scientific production and research potential at international level
• Graphene synthesis and characterisation using chemical vapour deposition
• Anticorrosive and anti-abrasive coatings: chemistry/physics
• Advanced laboratory and/or cleanroom work
• Characterisation (AFM, Raman, polarization measurements, tribology/wear)
• Electrochemical methods for corrosion testing of coatings
• Supervision of students or project leadership
• Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
• Excellent communication and language skills
• International research and collaborative project experience

Benefits

Candidates for the 3-year PhD scholarship should have a master's degree in engineering, physics or chemistry, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:

• Graphene growth and process optimisation using chemical vapour deposition
• Experience with other carbon based coatings (i.e. DLC, composites) for protection of stainless steels
• Relevant graphene characterisation techniques (Raman spectroscopy, SEM, AFM)
• Electrochemistry including common corrosion testing techniques
• Electroplating and/or other deposition techniques
• Tribocorrosion / wear: prevention and testing
• Excellent communication and language skills

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
