Postdoctoral position (Dresden)

At the TU Dresden, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Institute for Materials Science, chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, is offering a

Postdoctoral position (TV-L)

The position is funded for a period of two years, with possibility of extension. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG).
The position is supported by the European Union through the Integrated Project AtMol, consisting of an international team of 11 groups going to establish a radically different and comprehensive process flow for fabricating a molecular chip with atomic scale precision. A novel interconnection strategy will be
developed to integrate single molecule logic gates while preserving the integrity of the gates down to the atomic level.
Logic functions will be incorporated in a single molecule gate, with the help of atom-by-atom manipulation, on-surface chemistry, and UHV transfer printing technology.
Tasks: The focus of the postdoctoral position is part of the goals of the recently founded SPM-laboratory (Head: Dr.
Francesca Moresco). In particular, the successful candidate is expected to operate a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM) to develop new and highly reproducible manipulations to contact a molecule with dangling bond wires on a H-terminated silicon surface and to demonstrate its logic functions. The work will include imaging and tunneling spectroscopy of conjugated molecules on metallic and semiconductor surfaces. Further tasks will be to review the scientific progress of the group, to present scientific results at the AtMol meetings, and to manage the cooperation with the AtMol partners.

Requirements: For a successful application an academic degree and a doctorate in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related area are required.
Good communication and writing skills in English are required.
Experience in experimental surface science and ultra high vacuum (UHV) technology is required. A specific experience with AFM or STM and atomic/molecular manipulation is of advantage.
