4-year PhD position about electrochemical deposition and surface modification of nanostructured materials. The research work will be carried out at the research group Electrochemical and Surface Engineering (SURF) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in the framework of various Flemish and European projects. Experimental work and computer modeling will be carried out in combination. One vacancy is focused mostly on experimental research and a second vacancy is focused mostly on computer modeling. Description

You will work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural (more than 50 people, more than 12 nationalities) research group, oriented to study electrochemical processes combining local and global electrochemical techniques, modeling, and nanoscale surface characterization (both ex-situ and in-situ). Your work will be part of several Flemish and European research projects such as "Functional Ordered Nanomaterials via Electrochemical Routes in Non-Aqueous Electrolytes" (NANEL); or "Design and Prediction of Nanostructured Metal Surfaces" (NANOMET). The joint aim of these projects is to understand the principles of nanoscale electrodeposition towards achieving supported nanostructures with enhanced functional properties. Your work will be first aimed at understanding the formation of ordered nanostructures by the use of aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes (Ionic Liquids, Deep Eutectic Solvents). Then, your work will be devoted to characterize the functional properties of the designed nanostructures towards their use in different applications (electrocatalysis, electrochemical sensors, SERS based sensors, etc). To perform this research you will have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment in electrochemistry (potentiostats, electrochemcial reactors, SECM, SVET-SIET,...) and surface analysis at the nanoscale (FESEM, FEAuger, XPS, Ellipsometry, AFM/STM, Raman, ...). As the PhD project is part of several international networks, the PhD work will be carried out in collaboration with other institutes. Hence, secondments at other institutions are also possible.

Benefits

- A PhD scholarship position (100%) for a period of 4 years. The salary is approximately 1800-2000 Euros/Month. - A challenging, dynamic and stimulating work in an internationally renowned research group. - A multicultural and international work environment. - An international network dealing with state-of-the-art research. - Working in Brussels, the Capital of Europe, one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the world. A vibrant and charming city which combines history, modernity, arts and gastronomy.
