NANOTECHNOLOGY IN FUEL CELLS

Recent nanotechnology research has produced a number of promising #nanomaterials which could make fuel cells cheaper, lighter and more efficient. #Modified_carbon_nanotubes may also be able to replace #platinum_fuel_cells altogether. Fabrication technology for #carbon_nanotubes is advancing rapidly, and the cheap and abundant raw material means that catalysts based on #carbon_nanotubes can be produced for a fraction of the cost of #platinum_catalysts. As platinum currently accounts for at least 25% of the cost of commercial fuel cells, adoption of these catalysts will remove a major barrier to many applications of fuel cells. Also, solid electrolyte, such as a conducting ceramic likes #Yttrium_stabilized_zirconia (YSZ), or polymers like #perfluorosulfonic acid are used in fuel cell design.
