The Department of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Associate Specialist in nanotechnology, under the direction of Dr. Nader Pourmand. Applicants should be able to contribute to nanotechnology research and development on the Nanopipette platform, biosensors and assays. Possible related areas of research might include molecular biology and biochemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to make substantive contributions to nanotechnology research; evaluate and interpret data; prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals; supervise and train graduate students and staff in molecular biology techniques (including cell culturing, DNA sequencing, PCR, nucleic acid isolation and purification). We have a preference for candidates with expertise in nanotechnology.

RANK: Associate Specialist I - Associate Specialist II

SALARY: $50,820 - 54,336, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: M.S. or equivalent degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related field; demonstrated record of research in molecular biology, biochemistry or related field; experience summarizing research results and preparing manuscripts for publication; at least one year laboratory experience with molecular biology or biochemistry techniques; experience using personal computers as an analytical tool (spreadsheets, data reduction software, etc.) and familiarity with computer control of instrumentation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related field; 2 years of relevant laboratory experience; demonstrated publication record; experience with Nanopipette platform, biosensors and assays.

POSITION AVAILABLE: April 1, 2014. Appointments are contingent upon availability of funding.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of extension through June 30, 2015. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment, a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
