The position is funded by the EU Marie-Curie Initial Training Network project PATHCHOOSER, a multi-site network of Early Stage Researchers and Experienced Researchers at 9 Partner and 2 Associated Partner institutions across Europe including the private sector.

The overall aim is to investigate the safe crossing of biological barriers which would open the way to therapeutics for many intractable diseases, and lower the cost of treating many others. The overarching intention of PATHCHOOSER is to create the knowledge (and develop the people to further build that knowledge) to understand how to control the bio-nano interface to promote biological barrier crossing.

The PhD project at Manchester is concerned with the design of degradable and targeted nanoparticle-based delivery vehicles with an emphasis on the brain tissue. Results will be exchanged with our European collaborators to develop nano-bio interfacial strategies for intracellular delivery beyond barrier crossing. You will use and develop existing state of the art methods and materials in nanotechnology for cellular drug delivery. The work will be performed in close collaboration with members of the network.

An Early Stage Researcher is a researcher who, at the time of recruitment, has not yet been awarded a doctorate degree and is in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research career.

The position is open to applicants of all nationalities. At the time of recruitment, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of the beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your recruitment under the project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

You will be appointed under a full employment contract and receive a salary in the region of £40,000 subject to Marie Curie regulations. A mobility allowance depending on personal situation is also paid. You will be expected to register for a PhD degree at the University of Manchester.

Remuneration for this position will be in accordance with the regulations of the Marie Curie Research Training Networks scheme.

Please make sure that you check the mobility criteria of the Marie Curie Research Training Networks before you apply to ensure that you are eligible.
