Electron microscopic detection of nanoparticles in cells (Karlsruhe)

Nanoparticles are frequently used as additives in food and articles of daily use which necessitates studies of possible adverse effects on biological systems. In this context, the Laboratory for Electron Microscopy at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is recruiting a PhD student for an interdisciplinary project concerned with the detection of nanoparticles in cells. The PhD candidate with a Diplom/Master in physics is expected to use advanced electron microscopic techniques for nanoparticle detection in cells and image simulations to understand contrast formation. Further tasks involve the optimization of electron microscopic techniques and participation in cell culture experiments.

We offer a thorough electron microscopy education and top state-of-the-art equipment. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with biologists at the Institute of Toxicology and Genetics (KIT), who focus on toxicological aspects of nanoparticles uptake. Biological training will occur within the Biointerfaces International Graduate School at KIT.
