Nanofibers in Wound Repair and Tissue Regeneration

CRC Press

Editors: Nimet Bolgen and Ashok Vaseashta

Theme and Scope: Wound healing is a highly coordinated, multistage biological process that restores the structure and functionality of tissues disrupted by physical, chemical, or biological insults. It encompasses tightly regulated cellular and molecular programs that collectively re-establish tissue integrity. Effective wound healing is essential for functional tissue regeneration and preventing secondary complications. Electrospun nanofibers have gained prominence as next-generation wound dressings and regenerative scaffolds due to their extracellular-matrix-like architecture, high porosity, large surface area-to-volume ratio, and ability to encapsulate and deliver therapeutic agents in a controlled manner. Despite recent advancements in nanofiber-based biomedical technologies, the literature remains scant, spanning both specialized articles and broad texts and offering limited coverage of nanofibers' role in wound healing and regeneration. Existing resources focus on general biomaterials, providing limited insight into nanofibers’ unique biological interactions, multifunctional design, and translational challenges. This book addresses that gap by providing an integrated, nanofiber-centered perspective on materials selection, fabrication, functionalization, and biological mechanisms relevant to wound repair. Highlighting emerging directions, the proposed book offers an avant-garde overview of the information needed to apply nanofiber technologies across a broad spectrum of tissue regeneration. By conjoining fundamental insights with application-driven chapters and emerging directions, the book will serve as a consolidated resource for researchers, students, and industry professionals. It will bridge a critical gap in literature by providing nanofiber technologies for wound management and tissue regeneration.
