Bionanotechnology for viral diagnostics

At the MeBioS division of the University of Leuven we are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher interested in bionanotechnology Bionanotechnology for viral diagnostics The fundamental research activities of the MeBioS-Biosensor group (www.biosensors.be) focus on the development of novel bio-molecular detection concepts and miniaturized analysis systems. The applications span a broad range of sectors including food and medical diagnostics. The MeBioS-Biosensor group closely follows the emerging field of biosensing and is active in the following domains (i) Bio-assay development (e.g., aptamers, biofunctionalized nanomaterials), (ii) Optical sensors (e.g., fiber optic SPR sensors) (iii) Microfluidics (e.g., lab-on-a-chip technology). Website unit Responsibilities Bionanotechnology is a highly interdisciplinary field bringing together physical, engineering and life sciences. Biosensors are a typical outcome of bionanotechnology research. As a subgroup of chemical sensors their detection of a target is based on the specific interaction between this target and a biorecognition molecule, being an enzyme, antibody, aptamer, micro-organism or even a whole cell. In general biosensors differ from more conventional analytical systems for a higher selectivity and specificity, lower production costs and more limited sample preparation time. Within our group, we are looking for a post-doctoral researcher with a proven track record in biosensing and bio-assay development including expertise in nanoparticle technology, antibody- and DNA-based detection assays and sensor platforms. The candidate will have to implement bio-assays on a selection of optical and piëzo-electric transduction platforms and more specifically contribute to the ongoing EU-research projects on the detection of Influenza A and B as well as Norovirus. Tasks related to this position include: (a) Scientific research, (b) Dissemination of results, (c) Daily supervision of PhD students working on related topics, (d) Assisting in writing scientific publications, project proposals and EU project progress reports. Profile For this position we are looking for a motivated, communicative researcher with leadership skills having obtained a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bioscience Engineering, Nanotechnology or equivalent. Motivation letter, C.V. and names of two referees should be submitted to: jeroen.lammertyn@biw.kuleuven.be. Offer Postdoctoral position for 1 year at KU Leuven (can be extended with an extra year) Interested? For more information please contact Prof. dr. ir. Jeroen Lammertyn, tel.: +32 16 3 21459, mail: jeroen.lammertyn@biw.kuleuven.be. You can apply for this job no later than October 15, 2013 via the online application tool (Ref. BAP-2013-451)
