The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility GmbH (European XFEL GmbH) is a multi-national non-profit company. It will make available X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. Located in the Hamburg area, Germany, it will comprise scientific instruments for a wide range of experimental techniques. Construction of the European XFEL is underway; user operation starts in 2016. In order to support the preparation and later implementation of a scientific programme aiming at excellence in the above disciplines, a theoretical effort is being set up in collaboration with the I. Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Hamburg (Prof. A. Lichtenstein). In the frame of this group, a position is being opened for a Theoretical physicist (f/m) for structural studies of matter.
The position The successful candidate will contribute to further developments of the theory of interaction between FEL radiation and matter with applications to experimental cases of interest for one or more instruments at the European XFEL. The focus of activity should be on studies of the structure of matter based on first principles molecular dynamics, the modeling of X-ray induced damage and the interpretation of X-ray diffraction data for imaging and nano-crystallography. He/She will work in close cooperation with instrument scientists at the European XFEL and with the members of the European XFEL group on simulation of photon fields in the framework of large international collaborations. Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organisations in Germany. In addition, European XFEL provides a non-contributory company pension scheme as well as broad relocation benefits. The European XFEL GmbH intends to achieve a widely international staff.
