Tenure Track in Nanotechnology and in Ultrafast and Intense Optics (1-3 positions)
The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at Tampere University of Technology, founded in 2000, is the leading research centre in optoelectronics and photonics in Finland. ORC carries out high-quality fundamental and applied research in two research areas, namely Nanotechnology, and Ultrafast and Intense Optics. These research areas are further divided into four research groups, which are Semiconductor Technology, Nanophotonics, Surface Science, and Ultrafast and Intense Optics. In 2015, ORC runs 40 research and collaborative projects, has a budget of about 6.0 M€ and employs 70 people.

Job description:
The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at Tampere University of Technology is inviting applications for 1-3 tenure track positions in the area of Nanotechnology, and Ultrafast and Intense Optics. Special emphasis is placed on optoelectronics applications in life sciences, nonlinear photonics and fiber laser technologies.
The position(s) will be filled at the level of Assistant Professor (1st term), Assistant Professor (2nd term) or Associate Professor based on the experience and competence of the successful candidate(s).

Requirements:
All candidates considered for a tenure track position are expected to:
– hold an applicable doctoral degree,
– demonstrate the capacity for independent scholarly activity,
– possess the teaching skills required for the successful performance of their duties, and
– have the ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary university environment and with industry.
Depending on the tenure track level, we expect candidates either to demonstrate potential for or have a proven track record of securing external research funding and possess excellent academic credentials. We also expect the candidates to have the competence to develop, lead and maintain a high-quality research programme leading to national and international recognition.
The successful candidates are expected to have a demonstrated record of achievements in research that is both scientifically significant and has potential for real-life industrial applications and commercialization. Ideally, the successful candidates’ research has the potential to cut across other fields of research at ORC/TUT. We also expect the candidates to possess the competence to respond to future research and educational needs and thereby complement and strengthen ORC’s current priority areas.

Salary:
The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. In addition, TUT has implemented bonus systems.
Trial period:
The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a trial period of four months.
Other:
Candidates may be invited to a video interview during the first stage of the recruitment process. The most qualified candidates will be invited to take part in an external review and a personal interview by the Tenure Track Working Group, undergo an aptitude assessment, and give a trial lecture.
The expected start date is 1 March 2016 or as mutually agreed upon by both parties.
The positions of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor are filled for a fixed-term period of four years. The length of the fixed-term period is based on the University’s tenure track system. The University is committed to providing researchers on the tenure track the opportunity to advance to the next level, provided that their performance is found to meet the requirements in the relevant reviews. The promotion reviews and tenure reviews are conducted at least one year before the employment contract ends.
