For entry in early 2014 Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) is offering a number of PhD studentships in the broad areas of Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, and Materials Sciences, to work in the Materials Research Institute.

The Materials Research Institute is a new initiative to bring together researchers in the Schools of Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry and Dentistry in order to better enable collaborative research in the materials area. PhD students supported by an MRI scholarship will be based in two schools, and will interact with the wider materials research community within the college. It is anticipated that PhD students will be able to draw on the facilities and expertise that exists widely within the institute.

The topic of this project is Hierarchical Multifunctional Nanocomposite Structures and has a strong focus on graphene and graphene nanocomposites.
QMUL currently presents a unique combination of expertise which can be instrumental to provide a substantial contribution to the areas of advanced manufacturing and graphene nanocomposites (Prof Ton Peijs and Dr Emiliano Bilotti). Two recently recruited members of staff (Dr. Ettore Barbieri, Prof. Nicola Pugno) have brought in expertise on advanced (nano)-materials analytical and computational modelling, which synergistically integrate with the existing expertise on polymer nano-composites processing and characterisation.
Therefore this studentship is a strong interdisciplinary collaboration between 4 academics, creating momentum on the area of multifunctional, hierarchical materials.

Applicants must have a first class honours degree in a physical sciences subject
