The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, an international research organization registered in the UN and located in Braga, Portugal ( http://www.inl.int), is seeking a strongly motivated Group Leader to develop applications of Nanotechnologies to agro-food and environmental areas, and to lead INLs effort in this area. Topics of interest include (non-exclusive list), early detection and effective intervention technologies for ensuring food safety and biosecurity,  nanoscale-based sensing mechanisms and devices for reliable and rapid detection of diseases and monitoring of physiological biomarkers for optimal agricultural production, smart labels for food packaging and in particular design and fabrication of indicators for food quality and safety and control (freshness, ripeness, smell, taste, oxygen or spoilage), nanostructure-nanosensor based methodologies for water quality control. Other key goals could be nanoscale biofilms for food packaging and contact materials that extend shelf life, retain quality and reduce cooling requirements, and nano-enabled systems for controlled release of nutrients, fertilizers and pesticides in soil systems. The researcher will collaborate with teams at INL developing chemical and bio‐functionalized nanostructures, and teams developing electronically based sensors on various substrates.

INL offers an exciting, and highly competitive research environment, with a state of the art research facility. Researchers will be offered substantial starting funds (both for capital equipment and research personnel) to help them jump start their research activities, together with a competitive salary and a comprehensive fringe benefit package.

INL facilities are located in Braga (150,000 inhabitants, and a city with a high quality and attractive living environment), 30min drive from the Oporto Airport, a 30 min drive from the North Atlantic coast, and about 45min drive to the Galician border and the mountains of the Geres National Park.

Enquires should be made to Prof. Paulo Freitas (paulo.freitas@inl.int).

The application is made online through INL´s portal at: http://inl.int/job_offers

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a research statement/proposal.
