Carbon Nanotubes and Fullerenes

fn1_lg_15_fullerenes.docfn1_lab_07_cnt.docfn1_3a_fullerenes.pptSince their discovery in the 1980's fullerenes and carbon nanotubes have become a symbol of nanotechnology. Covering carbon nanotubes is an essential part of any introductory nanoscience course. In this section I cover the history and discovery of carbon nanotubes, the nomenclature used to categorize CNTs, properties and applications of CNTs, and production methods for CNTs.For the lab you should have a few materials. The molecular modeling pieces I obtained from the following company: can obtain these as a kit: you can buy the pieces individually but be sure to get the soft pieces because the others are not suitable for making carbon nanotubes and fullerenes. The other activity makes use of a hexagon grid printed on a piece of transparency paper. If you do not have a hexagon grid you can use the one in my powerpoint. You will need a magic marker that can write on transparency paper. I use tape to label the hexagons for counting.A space elevator video can be found on YouTube:
