In 2012, Denmark and Belgium followed France’s example and started the development of a national regulation mandating the reporting of nanomaterials and/or products containing nanomaterials. Meanwhile other European Member States have repeatedly urged the European Commission to implement measures for the reporting and market surveillance of nanomaterials on the European level.
The nanotechnology industries are faced with a large burden in complying with the mandatory reporting requirements, but many questions still remain:
- Who will have access to the information submitted under the respective reporting schemes?
- How will the information be used and protected?
-How can data be submitted efficiently to more than one reporting scheme?
-What are consequences of reporting a nanomaterial?
- What measurement methods should be used to reliably show that a material is not a nanomaterial?
