Jason Shear and Bryan Kaehr at The University of Texas at Austin are making smart materials smarter. This video shows a rod they photofabricated from protiens reacting to a change in pH. The rod unfurls like a fern fiddlehead emerging from the ground in spring. The hope is to use this ability to control nanostructures for use in capturing and culturing bacteria, for motors and other parts in nano-bio-machines, and for drug delivery mechanisms.
