My research field or area of interest innanotechnology

I started my experience in preparation and characterization of ligands and their transition metal complexes in 1999 during my M. Sc. One ligand and its fifteen transition metal complexes were synthesized and characterized. During my PhD: 9 new ligands were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and spectral studies (IR, NMR (1H and 13C NMR, NOESY, COSY and HSQC), UV and mass spectroscopy). The transition metal complexes of these ligands were prepared by the reaction of the transition metal ions with these new ligands, and characterized by elemental analyses, spectrophotometric studies (IR, NMR, ESR and UV-Vis.), and molar conductivity and magnetic moment determinations. During the period 2007-2009, I travelled to “Università degli Studi di Milano”, Milano, Italy and started by work in catalysis. The catalytic behaviour of some cobalt(II) and copper(II) were examined toward the decomposition of ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) in the presence of olefins to yield cyclopropane products has also been investigated. Although various methodologies are available today, the cycloaddition of carbenoids to C=C double bonds is practically the most important one to construct this class of compounds. Stereochemical control of these reactions, such as differentiation of the enantiotopic faces of the double bond or cis-trans selectivity imposed on the cyclopropanation reaction by the presence of a substituent at the carbenoid carbon are the main issues. As a model reaction we choose the cyclopropanation of -methyl styrene by EDA (EDA = ethyl diazoacetate). Cyclopropanes were obtained in high yield (up to 97%, TON up to 16,900) with moderate to good diastereoselectivities (50–91%).
