Application of tensile strength of carbon nanotubes Importance of proposed work & justification for study: The most interesting nanostructures with large application potential are carbon nanotubes. A carbon nanotube is a sheet of graphite rolled into a tube with bonds at the end of the sheet forming the bonds that close the tube. Among the properties of carbon nanotues like conductivity, high tensile strength, metallic etc applicable in feilds like field Eemission and shielding, chemical sensors, mechanical reinforcement etc, I have chosen high tensile strength, being the typical property of carbon nanotube. Incorporating carbon nanotube increases the modulus & toughness of the composite, because of it's high tensile strength and large length:diameter ratios. The tensile strength of carbon nanotubes is around 45 billion pascals & a single-walled nanotube (SWNT) can have a diameter of 2 nanometer and a length of 100 micrometer. Work done in this feild: General Motors Research and Development Center has shown that adding to polypropylene 11.5% by weight of nested carbon nanotubes having an 0.2 pm diameter approximately doubled the tensile strength of the polypropylene. A study at the University of Tokyo showed that incorporation of 5% by volume of nanotubes in aluminum increased the tensile strength by a factor of 2 compared to pure aluminum subjected to the same processing. It demonstrates that the carbon nanotubes can be put into aluminum, and are chemically stable through the necessary processing . Many more works have been done in this feild & there is a greater scope for research & development. Methodology applied : Devices may be designed such that super-strong fibes can be developed by increasing length:diameter ratios of carbon nanotubes & incorporating in composites.
