SAFENANO Nanotechnology Safety website http://www.safenano.org
Following extensive consultation and re-design, the new SAFENANO website offers a wealth of up-to-date information of value to industry, researchers, policy makers and the wider public in addressing nanotechnology safety issues:
SAFENANO Knowledge Base disseminates emerging scientific evidence through news and events pages, feature articles, and an updated resources section containing key links, recommended reading lists and a comprehensive nano-glossary. New features include dedicated information on current guidance, regulation and standards, and an updated version of the popular monthly SAFENANO bulletin.
SAFENANO Scientific Services provides expertise in exposure measurement, toxicology, occupational hygiene, risk assessment and training for industry, researchers and policy makers. Technical briefings, service brochures and our Nanosafety Test are also available for download to assist those in the field to understand and consider options for controlling potential risks.
SAFENANO Research showcases our recent and ongoing work, which encompasses the development, evaluation and dissemination of new knowledge in nanotoxicology, exposure and risk management and demonstrates how we support nanotechnology innovation.
SAFENANO is now Europe’s Centre of Excellence on Nanotechnology Hazard and Risk, a transition which has been made based on our ongoing provision of the highest quality information and consultancy services to clients and stakeholders.
Rob Aitken, Director of SAFENANO said “Five years on from the original launch of the SAFENANO website, the landscape in relation to nanotechnology risk issues has changed beyond all recognition. An enormous body of work is underway addressing, hazard, exposure and risk through research programmes, government and regulatory activities, industrial projects and standardisation”.
“The need for clear informed assessment of the issues and their consequences is greater than ever. Provision of this has been core to our mission since SAFENANO’s inception. With the benefits it brings to the nanotechnology community, we are delighted to launch the new SAFENANO website to address this need.”
About SAFENANO
SAFENANO is based at the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) in Edinburgh, Scotland. The launch of the new website is part of SAFENANO’s ongoing commitment to improve the understand and control of risks posed by nanomaterials to the workforce, consumers, the general population and the environment through research, consultancy and service work for industry and government.
About the Institute of Occupational Medicine
The Institute of Occupational Medicine is a major independent centre of scientific excellence in the fields of occupational and environmental health, hygiene and safety. Our mission is to benefit those at work and in the community by providing quality research, consultancy and training in health, hygiene and safety and by maintaining our independent, impartial position as an international centre of excellence.The IOM has more than one hundred scientific, technical and support staff based in Edinburgh, Chesterfield, London and Stafford.

Dear Nanotechnology Expert,
We are working for the European Nanocom project. NanoCom is a coordinated action funded by the European Commission under the FP7 NMP programme. FP7 NMP-2009-1.2-5 Best practices to lower the barriers for commercialisation of nanotechnology research
We are contacting you as a possible key relevant organization (KRO) in nanotechnology. We are looking for KROs who are working on/developed emerging Nanotechnologies ( in the very early stage) and pursue rapid commercialization of their innovative nanotechnology driven products with the financial involvement of an investor.
The NanoCom coordinated action aims to contribute towards bridging the gap between lab based and commercial/ industrial applications in nanotechnology.
· Barriers of commercialization: identifying & creating new ways to lower
· Best practices in commercialization: identifying & promoting
· Open innovation: new, nano specific approach
· Road mapping, policy and investment advise
· Commercialization oriented forum
The planning is to have all interested KROs identified as soon as possible by 31st of May 2011.
If you are interested in such opportunities please advise: Company name/division, type/field of nanotechnology/ product, address, contact details (e-mail address) of responsible contactperson
Thanks and best regards

NanoCom
The NanoCom coordinated action is funded by the European Commission under the FP7 NMP Programme and brings together a strong consortium of sixteen partners from industry and academia with expertise in nanotechnologies from across Europe.
The project, of duration 36 months, commenced on 1stDecember 2009. It aims to contribute towards bridging the gap between lab based and industrial applications in nanotechnology. This will be achieved by creating a European wide approach with mechanisms for lowering the barriers to commercialisation and spreading open innovation best practice for rapid commercialisation and investment in innovative nanotechnology driven products.
The NanoCom vision is supported by the following key objectives:
A critical analysis of barriers for rapid commercialisation of emerging Micro and Nano Technologies that result from many complementary EC, national and industrially funded Research and Development (R&D) projects;
Analysis and promotion of best practices via new nanotechnology and nano-manufacturing specific open innovation methodology and tools and provide roadmapping, policy and investment advice at EU, national and regional levels;
Creation of a commercialisation oriented forum and mechanisms for coordinating the efforts of many complementary R&D projects in ERA;
Training and dissemination in best practices for open innovation and commercialisation of nanotechnology.
Over the course of the NanoCom project, public deliverables addressing the specific objectives highlighted, are being made available through the NanoCom and NANOfutures websites. To download the latest deliverable documents please visit: www.nanocom-eu.org/NanoCom/Dissemination.html

On 9th February 2011, the European Commission presented a Green Paper which proposes major changes to EU research and innovation funding to make participation easier, increase scientific and economic impact and provide better value for money. The changes, to be introduced in the next EU budget after 2013, would bring together the current Framework Programme for research, the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
The Commission is seeking the views of all interested individuals and organisations on these proposed changes and on the specific questions set out in the Green Paper. The deadline for contributions is Friday 20 May 2011. In parallel, a competition for the name of the Common Strategic Framework is being organised.
There are a number of ways to contribute through this website:
The responses received will be analysed carefully be the Commission services. They will be used to design the proposals, to be presented by the Commission by the end of 2011, for a legislative decision of the Council and Parliament on the Common Strategic Framework.
