Lots of people are in your situation. It's a huge field and you need to come at it from one subject or another. For instance, lots of people use backgrounds in EE, biology, or computer science to specialize in nanotechnology. My advice is to talk to people who are doing what you want to do and ask them how they got there. I'm sure they would be flattered to talk to you.
