Two PhD positions in Nanotechnology at NTNU, Norway

Two PhD positions are offered within a new research project funded by the “FRINATEK” program of the Research Council of Norway, at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (IET) in Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engin... (IME), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The primary objective for the two PhD positions (PhD1(MBE) and PhD2(device)) is to study solar cells based on III-V semiconductor nanowires.

  • For PhD1(MBE), the main task is the growth (and growth modelling) of the nanowires by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), as well as structural characterisation using SEM, TEM and STM. An existing MBE as well as new dedicated MBE system to be installed in 2013 will be available for the student as well as highly equipped labs for the structural characterization.
  • For PhD2(device), the main tasks will be related to processing of the nanowire solar cell devices as well as detailed nano-optical device characterization and simulation. A new 700 m2 clean room, “NTNU NanoLab” (, as well as a dedicated Nanophotonics Lab will be used for the device processing and device characterization.

The PhD students will be working in close collaboration with other PhD students and post docs working on related nanowire projects. The PhD students will receive a strong multi-disciplinary training by working in a rich scientific environment through collaborations with other departments at the university as well as foreign collaboration partners.

Award holders at NTNU are normally appointed for 4 years with 25% of the time spent on teaching assistance and related assignments. The objective of the grant is to obtain a PhD degree, hence the successful applicant must be enrolled as a PhD candidate at NTNU. See also information about PhD education at NTNU at

The appointment is at code 1017, salary level 48 the national salary scheme, gross NOK. 391 100 per annum, of which 2% is deducted for the State Pension scheme.


The application must contain information about education, examinations and previous experience. Certified copies of testimonies and documents must be attached. NTNU’s PhD rules require a master degree or equivalent, with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best).
