" ...recent [USA] federal regulatory actions may impact a university’s nanotechnology operations. In April 2011, NIOSH issued recommended exposure limits (RELs) for titanium dioxide. This action followed NIOSH’s action in 2010 to initiate a public comment process on its draft recommendations for REL’s and certain workplace practices related to carbon nanotube and carbon nanofiber operations. These actions set forth specific numbers that can be pointed to by regulators and potential litigants when questioning the adequacy of safety measures implemented by a university in its nanotechnology labs. This presentation will discuss how a university needs to protect itself to demonstrate effort taken to ensure its labs meet these limits and the effectiveness of these efforts. "
