Research fellow in microsystem technology

University College of Southeast Norway was established 1 January 2016, and has about 16 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university college is temporarily organized in eight faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses. The main profile of the university college is to provide socially relevant education, geared towards specific professions, and adapted to the requirements of the workplace, as well as to produce applied research and development.

Research fellow in microsystem technology

The Faculty of Technology and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as Research Fellow in microsystem technology from 01.09.2016 or as soon as possible.

The research fellow will be affiliated with the Department of Micro and Nano System Technology and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold in Horten.

The university college will during 2016 be reorganized, which may affect the position's organizational affiliation.

Qualifications requirements

Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in microsystem technology, nanotechnology or closely related subjects. The applicant must have gained the degree within the application deadline.

It is a requirement that the successful applicant obtains admission to HSN’s doctoral programme in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems, which requires an average grade B from Master’s degree, in addition to grade B at the final master project.

The staff at the faculty work within subject teams to a large extent, and the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.

We are looking for a person with strong communication skills (including English writing skills) and strong analytical capabilities who is capable of working in a multidisciplinary research environment. The candidate must have a suitable background for work on design, modelling, clean-room fabrication and test of electrostatic MEMS devices. Both the theoretical and the laboratory aspects must be mastered.

Information about the position

In this project, we consider technologies that have the potential to work at substantially higher temperatures than semiconductor electronics. In particular, we will investigate solutions based on micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) technology that allows integration of complex functionality on one chip, but relies on electromechanical switches instead of transistors. The work will involve design of switches, development of electromechanical circuit concepts, process development and subsequent clean-room fabrication to realize and test the ideas.

Appointment is for a period of three years. The position does not include teaching duties.

For further information concerning the position please contact Professor Einar Halvorsen (+47 31009318) or Professor Kaiying Wang (+47 31009317) at Department of Micro and Nano System Technology.

An ongoing reorganizing effort may affect the position's responsibilities, duties and line of work.
