Research Engineer in Electron Microscopy

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Swedens technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

The School of Information and Communication Technology, ICT, conducts research and education at leading international level in Material Physics, Photonics/Optics, Electronic Systems, Integrated Devices and Circuits, as well as Communication Systems. Our research activity encompasses both basic and applied level. We offer a wide spectrum of educational programs at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level. The ICT School fosters close collaboration with Swedish and international companies and research institutes as well as surrounding associations such as Kista Science City.

The research activities will be focused on the state of the art microscopy equipment currently available and under development at the center: field emission transmission electron microscopy (TEM/STEM), ultrafast time resolved TEM (dynamic TEM or UEM), a highly specialized focused ion beam (FIB)-scanning electron microscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Support activities will involve managing training operations and maintenance of the instruments, as well as administration of EM users and accounts.

You will be responsible for:

  • Promote the advancement of TEM, time resolved TEM, FIB, and SEM based research and associated analysis techniques, through instrument development and research publication.
  • Develop methodologies for ultrafast time resolved TEM, photo activated TEM, and in-situ TEM. The time resolved TEM will be the first of its kind in Sweden and a unique research opportunity.
  • Manage training operations in SEM, TEM and FIB (TEM foil fabrication, atom probe needle fabrication) divisions of the EM facility;
  • Conceptualize, develop and deliver complex and tailored individual training, responsive to user needs for the TEM and specialist applications; including SEM/FIB-SEM, TEM, and FIB (TEM sample fabrication).

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications (or equivalent experience):

  • Doctoral degree in science or materials and relevant laboratory experience.

Experience:

  • Competence in operation of field emission SEMs, TEMs, EELS in TEM, and dual beam SEM (FIB-SEMs).
  • Experience in the training of new users in the theoretical and practical operating principals of SEMs and TEMs.
