Description

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the area of Semiconductor Nanocrystals at 100% with a start date in Spring 2014.

Position Description
The Postdoctoral Researcher works at the UC, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory under the direction of Staff Scientist Jeffrey Urban and collaborates with Professor Rachel Segalman, in the Chemical Engineering Department at UC, Berkeley. The Postdoctoral Researcher prepares and characterizes semiconductor nanocrystals and composite thin films, and may become the lead Postdoctoral Researcher who works to understand the fundamental role of the organic/inorganic interfaces in macro scale device architectures. The Postdoctoral Researcher measures the thermoelectric parameters of these composite thin films to elucidate the manner in which different organic molecules can tune the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. The Postdoctoral Researcher is involved in several other collaborative efforts with other researchers at the Molecular Foundry (LBNL) that range from characterizing custom made polymers for thermoelectric applications, to developing new ligand stripping techniques for nanocrystal surfaces. The Postdoctoral Researcher also assists in scientific manuscript preparation, review, and daily lab maintenance.

Basic Qualifications
• The minimum qualification required to be considered for the position is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation

Additional Qualifications
• PhD in Chemical Engineering, Physics or Chemistry by start date
• Conduct research independently, and communicate ideas with supervisors and lab members
• Design and evaluate new experiments, develop new ideas, and expand on current research scope
• Be available to prepare manuscripts for publication of research findings
• Be available to attend and give seminars
• Use academic and work background to bring new expertise to the research program
• Train lab members and technicians on specialty lab equipment, and operate equipment throughout the lab

Preferred Qualifications
• Solution phase inorganic nanocrystal synthesis and purification
• Nanocrystal assembly
• Nanocrystal thin film preparation (i.e. spin coating, drop casting, dip coating)
• Nanocrystal surface engineering (ligand exchange)
• Experience working with polymers and small molecules
• Nanocrystal characterization techniques (TEM, SEM, absorption/fluorescence spectroscopies, XRD, ICP-AES, UPS/XPS)
• Nanocrystal device preparation (thermal evaporator, FET contacts, van der pauw contacts)
• Thin film characterization with emphasis on electrical and thermal measurements (conductivity and Seebeck coefficient)
• Data analysis/program design (Labview, Origin, Microsoft Suite, etc.)

Salary Range: $40,000 - $60,000
