Postdoctoral fellow in Solid State Physics

Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 2 år
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Physics, Lund
First day of employment: 2014-06-01
Official Records Number: LTHPA 2014/283

The research at the division of Solid State Physics is focused around different aspects of semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science to quantum physics, to different applications. The division leads the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University – the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University (nmC@LU ). Lund Nano Lab is a central key facility for fabrication of material and devices on the nanoscale. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the “Engineering Nanoscience” program.
The last decade, our research within the area of one-dimensional semiconductor structures, so-called nanowires, has been at the international forefront. So far, our three main areas have been: epitaxial growth of nanowires, fundamental properties studied with transport physics and optical physics, and more applied nanoelectronics. Subject area

Solid State Physics

Specific subject description

Research and development in growth of nanowires in the gas phase.

Job assignments

Within this project will be conducted basic as well as applied research related to III-V semiconductor nanowires by means of a new method, where the wires grow free flying directly in the gas phase, so-called Aerotaxy. The research will primarily be directed towards development of the growth process in order to expand the parameter space in terms of wire quality, shape and form, doping, and materials.
In parallel with the process development, the hardware is being developed for improvement regarding, e.g., direct feedback through in situ-analysis. To support the project, the research will also contain advanced materials analysis, in particular using electron microscopy, as well as with other types of materials and device characterization.
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to interact with the master students and the PhD-students in the research group and contribute to meetings and seminars. Teaching might also be part of the job

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Qualified for the position as postdoctoral fellow is a person who holds a doctorate or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctorate, and who has completed the degree within the three years prior to the last date for applications, unless there are valid reasons.
The subject of the doctorate degree schould be physics, chemistry or equivalent with focus on growth of semiconductor structures. Very good knowledge in English, written as well as spoken, is a requirement.

Basis of Assessment

The main assessment criteria are expected ability to develop and pursue research of high quality and pedagogical ability. In the appointment of a postdoctoral fellow, scientific skills will be the prime consideration. The assessment of qualifications will be based on the definition of the scope of the position in question. Desirable qualifications are experience with epitaxial growth of III-V nanostructures using MOVPE, HVPE or related methods, as well as development of epitaxial tools and hardware.
Other criteria are estimated ability to work independently and the ability to formulate and solve scientific questions as well as skills in written and oral communication. The research is to a large extent interdisciplinary, and a broad competence profile and experiences from relevant areas of physics, materials science and nanoscience are of special value. Important personal qualities are, beside creativity and a curious mind, the ability to work both independently and in a group and experience in the scientific interaction with researchers from other disciplines and in other countries.
