Job description The nano-structuring of water in these channels will probably affect (enhance?) the rate of proton transfer. In this project we will study the mechanism of proton transfer through different types of nano-channels in particular in so-called metal–organic frameworks that are promising proton conducting materials for applications in fuel cells. This research will be performed with ultrafast spectroscopic techniques like two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy and time-resolved surface sum-frequency generation spectroscopy.Research Aqueous proton (H+ ion) transfer is an extremely important and widespread process in nature that shows exciting physical properties. For bulk liquid water evidence has been found that proton transfer involves a special conduction mechanism in which the proton charge is transferred between hydrogen atoms located on different water molecules. This transfer strongly relies on the structure and dynamics of a large number of nearby water molecules. Aqueous proton transfer often takes place in nanometer sized volumes of water like for instance in trans-membrane channels and in the channels of nafion membranes in hydrogen fuel cells.
