The Optical Nanomaterial Group at the Physics Department of ETH Zurich of Assistant Professor Rachel Grange is seeking a highly motivated person for a PostDoc position in the area of non-metallic nanomaterials for metamaterials.

PostDoc position: Non-metallic nanomaterials for metamaterials

To overcome the disadvantage of losses in metallic structure usually used for the fabrication of meta-atoms, perovskite nanomaterials seems a promising alternative if the carrier density can be increased. Thus, such oxide-based nanomaterials may be seen as building blocks for the next generation of non metallic metamaterials. Since we are working with chemically synthesized nanoparticles, one main challenge is their alignment on a substrate to obtain a periodic structure acting as a metamaterial. This should be achieved with surface chemistry mechanism and/or focus ion beam (FIB) milling manipulations.

The successful candidate should be highly motivated and creative, show an exceptional track record, and have a background in physics, material sciences, optics, biochemistry, or related fields, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface of nanotechnology, photonics and material sciences. Furthermore the ideal skills needed for this project are in nanophotonics, surface and physical chemistry, nanomaterials, processing with FIB, FDTD simulations and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team. The preferred starting date for this position is January 2015.
