This programme aims to redefine the boundaries of optical control at the nanoscale. We will manipulate the structure of light itself, actively controlling features that are far smaller than the wavelength to tune them both in space and time. Doing so will require detailed knowledge on how the light field is distributed near complex nanophotonic structures, as well as of light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. The programme will build on recent breakthroughs in the group in ultrafast light manipulation and the discovery near nanostructures of so-called optical singularities, which can be considered the ultimate nanophotonic ‘object’ as their size is zero. Achieving our goals will require nonlinear optics, optical modelling and theory, nanofabrication and the development of a new near-field microscope to visualize nanoscale light.

Location

FOM Institute AMOLF performs leading fundamental research on physics of biomolecular systems and nanophotonics; two areas with key potential for technological innovations. The institute contributes to knowledge transfer to industry and society and trains talented young researchers. AMOLF is located at Science Park Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and engages approximately 140 scientists and 70 support staff. See also www.amolf.nl

Requirements

FOM prefers candidates who have qualifying experience (e.g. as PhD student or postdoctoral researcher) in a scientific research institute abroad. You meet the requirements for a doctoral degree.
