ICFO, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), is offering a PhD Student fellowship to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic graduate student who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment, as well as to obtain a doctoral degree in Photonics. The students at ICFO benefit from the extensive course offerings of local universities and focused instruction by ICFO professors while carrying out research activities at ICFO groups with local and international collaborators.

The successful candidate will be working at ICFO as part of the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group (http://www.icfo.eu/research/group_details.php?id=34) led by Prof. Maria Garcia-Parajo. The SMB group focuses on development of advanced optical techniques to the study of biological processes on living cells at the nanoscale.

The Ph.D. student will be involved in an interdisciplinary project, with research being conducted at the interface of photonics, biology and physics. The research will focus on the quantitative study of dynamic interactions on the plasma membrane of living cells at the single molecule level. The student will participate in the design and the construction of a new experimental setup for multi-color single-particle tracking and will conduct experiments on the diffusion and interactions of membrane receptors involved in the immunological response to pathogens.

In addition, the student will be exposed to state-of-the-art technology in biophotonics and super-resolution nanoscopy offered by the ICFO SLN (http://www.icfo.eu/research/sln.php). The project will be carried out in collaboration with worldwide leading groups in biology and immunology, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to benefit by a multidisciplinary and international environment.
