To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering one UK/EU PhD Scholarship, or International Fees Bursary for candidates with a 1st, 2(i), or equivalent, applying for the following project.

Closing date: 11th January 2013.

Studentships will start in September 2013

Supervisors: Dr Ali Adawi (a.adawi@hull.ac.uk, 01482 465037), Department of Physics and Mathematics,
Dr Jennifer Waby, Department of Biological Sciences,
Dr John Proctor, Department of Physics and Mathematics,
Dr Nicole Pamme, Department of Chemistry.

Recently plasmonic nano-sensors have emerged as powerful tools for biological or chemical nano-scale sensing such as molecular-binding events, catalytic reactions and hydrogen gas adsorption. However this technology is lacking the required sensitivity and ability to identify the nature of the detected or sensed molecules. In this research project they aim to revolutionize this technology and develop ultra high sensitive plasmonic nano-sensors that are capable of detecting and identifying molecules for chemical and biological applications with the potential to be integrated into a lab-on-a-chip platform.

They will aim to combine our experience in the areas of plasmonic optical spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to build plasmonic nano-sensors capable of detecting and identify (bio)molecules down into the single molecule level. Sensitivity will be enhanced via a revolutionary approach to exploit the way plasmonic nano-particles interact with light. This goal will be achieved though implementing plasmonic/photonic nano-gap platform into our sensors. They also aim to use these nano-sensors to identify the components of BRCA1 (Breast cancer 1, early onset) complexes in human cancer cell lines and to determine the DNA binding site of BRCA1.

They are looking for a self motivated person who will enjoy working in an interdisciplinary research environment. The successful candidate should have an honours degree (at least 2:1 or equivalent) in physics. This project work will be carried out within the Experimental Solid State Physics lab as well as the Lab-on-a-Chip group in the Chemistry Department and the Biomedical Sciences Group.

PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.
Successful applicants will be informed of the award by 29th March 2013.

Funding Notes:

A full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship will include fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£13,590 in 2013/14, subject to final confirmation) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.
Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, dependant on satisfactory progress, but no living expenses.
