PhD position available in the ultrafast x-ray imaging group at the University of Southampton

The ultrafast x-ray imaging group in Southampton, a collaboration between Chemistry and the ORC has developed a high resolution x-ray microscope based on high harmonic generation (HHG) and coherent diffraction imaging and pytography with which we currently can achieve better than 50 nm spatial resolution. These techniques use computational power to replace a lens system (not possible with x-rays) to enable the reconstruction of the phase to form an image. The project will continue the development of the system and the application of the microscope to the study of crystal nucleation, exploring the relationship between nano–mateiral structure and properties, and the study of biological samples.

The project is funded for 3 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in Chemistry or allied subjects/relevant disciplines. Funding will cover fees and a stipend at current research council rates of £ 13,863 per annum.

Due to funding restrictions this position is only open to UK  applicants
