Reference number: D12-1/14

The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden – in short IFW Dresden – is a non-university research institute and a member of the Leibniz Association. It is concerned with modern materials science and combines explorative research in physics, chemistry and materials science with technological development of new materials and products.

We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented PhD student with a diploma/master degree in physics or chemistry and good English communication skills.

Research Area:

Heusler compounds are highly functional materials and a very prominent subject to today’s research. The class of Heusler materials includes permanent magnets but also materials which are attractive candidates for magnetocalorics and spintronics.

The electronic, magnetic and crystallographic structure of Heusler materials is very inherently related to their physical properties. An important method to understand these intrinsic material properties is nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). By means of measuring NMR frequency spectra, relaxation times and enhancement factors the Ph.D. student should gain a broad understanding of the Heusler materials. Bulk samples as well as thin films will be used for these purposes.

The analytical comparison of the NMR results with the ones of other, complementary methods such as magnetization or X-ray diffraction measurements will be an important ingredient of the research activity. It will help to gain a broad understanding of the physical properties of the investigated Heusler compounds and will permit the Ph.D. student to widely overview the important interplay of the different techniques.

Experimental tasks comprise working with high frequency technique, cryogenics, vacuum technique, and sample preparation, programmation of measurements and analysis as well as static magnetic fields.

We offer:
  • an attractive work place with excellent facilities and environment in Dresden
  • a contract according to the German Public Sector Agreement (TV-L), wage group EG 13, 50% of the regular working time
  • a position, limited for 12 months with the possibility of extension
