The Optical Nanomaterial Group at the Physics Department of ETH Zurich of Assistant Professor Rachel Grange is seeking a highly motivated student for a PhD position in the area of nonlinear optical materials at the nanoscale.

PHD position in nanomaterials for nonlinear imaging applications

Within this research project the PhD student will have to explore the physical origin of nonlinear signals and its directionality in nanomaterials (from the volume or the surface?). At such small sizes, the surface to volume ratio is drastically modified and, additionally, the crystal structure becomes undefined. Such open issues have important consequences on the use of the material for very high density memories in the electronic industry and for the development of more sensitive imaging applications by suggesting new microscope designs. The PhD project consists in nanomaterials preparation and processing, nonlinear optical measurements, scattering simulations and multiphoton imaging applications.

The successful candidate should be highly motivated and creative, show an exceptional track record, and have a background in physics, material sciences, optics, biochemistry, or related fields, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface of nanotechnology, photonics and life sciences. The preferred starting date for this position is January 2015.
