Nanotechnology, Peace and Security

Nanotechnology is a key enabling technology that offers potential security threats as well as solutions to global challenges. While escaping the control of any individual government on its own, nanotechnology could be governed in international multi-stakeholder cooperation involving states, the scientific community, industry and civil society. Such cooperation should promote peaceful applications, not just defend against perceived threats to nanosecurity."

This is the conclusion of my invited lecture during the Global Futures Forum workshop on Transformational Technologies in Rome, 17-18 September. This well-received intervention was based on my PhD-thesis on Ethics and Nanotechnology and the article onThe Just War and the ethical governance of research.
