Goldhaber Fellowship - Upton, NY, United States

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has created the Gertrude and Maurice Goldhaber Distinguished Fellowships Program with funding from Battelle Memorial Institute and Stony Brook University, partners in Brookhaven Science Associates. These prestigious Fellowships are awarded to candidates with exceptional talent and credentials who have a strong desire for independent research at the frontiers of their fields. The fellowships are three-year appointments, and the fellowship program also provides a modest amount of independent funds for materials and supplies. Candidates should be no more than three years past receipt of the Ph.D. at the time of the application. The intention of the program is to select individuals who will qualify for scientific staff positions at BNL upon completion of the appointment.

BNL, a multidisciplinary laboratory, is dedicated to the advancement of physics, chemistry, and biology, and to medical, energy, nano and environmental sciences. BNL provides a suite of user facilities that include accelerators for particles, heavy ions and synchrotron light. Consideration will be given to excellent candidates with training in any discipline pertinent to these missions of the Laboratory. Candidates can refer to the Laboratory web page, http://www.bnl.gov, for more information about BNL, and in particular to the Employment opportunities describing present postdoctoral positions, many of which would qualify for consideration under this program.

Candidates seeking to apply for this unique opportunity should identify and discuss the opportunity with a sponsoring BNL mentor. The candidate then submits an application online at http://www.bnl.gov/HR/Careers/ (Job I.D. 16594). Candidate must attach the following items to their application as a single document or PDF: 1) a letter of intent outlining their research interests and their sponsoring BNL mentor, 2) a CV including a list of publications, 3) a list of three referees, and 4) a statement of research interests not to exceed 5 pages. In addition, please arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to Liz Flynn, at lflynn@bnl.gov. The application is complete when the sponsoring mentor and their Department notify

Dr. Bill Bookless
Assistant Laboratory Director for Policy and Strategic Planning
Brookhaven National Laboratory
Bldg. 460, 40 Brookhaven Avenue
Upton, NY 11973

by letter that they would be pleased to host the candidate as a Goldhaber Fellow.

Applications will be accepted until April 30, 2014. A maximum of two fellowships will be awarded on or about July 1, 2014.

To host a Goldhaber Fellow the sponsoring mentor must have an opening and be able to support the candidate at the standard starting salary for Postdoctoral Research Associates for a period of three years; the fellowship program will provide the additional funds to bring the salary up to the stated level and also provide a modest amount of independent funds for material and supplies. The prospective BNL mentor must submit a letter (no more than 2 pages) that is approved by the mentor’s Department Chair. The prospective mentor’s letter should state the candidate’s qualifications and their match to BNL’s S&T portfolio, and touch on possible career pathways for the candidate at BNL.
