Brief Description of the Institution

University of Thessaly in Volos Greece is a modern educational and scientific institution in continuous development since its establishment in 1985. In average, 10.000 students study at the UTH every year. All the UTH faculties provide study in accredited study programmes within the complex system of bachelor, master and PhD study. Faculties realise credit system compatible with the European credit transfer system enabling mutual mobility of students within European Union member countries and a larger European space. In the area of scientific and research activities the UTH successfully joins European Union programmes.

The Laboratory of Hydromechanics and Environmental Engineering is actively involved following a long term strategy in domains as a) Physics of Fluids b) Environmental fluid mechanics, c) deterministic and stochastic modeling of environmental time series, d) impact of regional and global climate change on water resources. Following a long term strategy it has been actively involved in recent years in modeling and simulation of nanofluidics and microfluidics using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods as well as Atomistic methods such as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and mesoscale methods such as Dissipative particle dynamics DPD), water purification. Different issues are studied by our members and PhD students including 5 full time professors.

RESEARCH PROJECT

Individual Fellowships (IF) provides support for Experienced Researchers (ER) undertaking mobility between countries. They provide opportunities to acquire and transfer new knowledge and to work on research in a European context. The scheme particularly supports the return and reintegration of researchers to Europe or Associated Countries. It also develops or helps to restart the careers of individual researchers that show great potential, considering their experience.

Proposals for Individual Fellowships involve a single host organisation (future beneficiary) established in a MS or AC and a researcher, and must be developed jointly between both parties. The project proposals are submitted by this host organization, which is represented by the supervisor, in liaison with the researcher.

In this instance the host organisation has decided the research project must be suitable for submission to the following evaluation panel:

  • Environment and Geosciences (ENV)
  • Physics (PHY)
  • Information Science and engineering (ENG)

For European Fellowships the applicants can submit their proposals as:

  • standard EF to the above evaluation panel;
  • to one of the 2 multidisciplinary panels: Career Restart Panel (CAR) and Reintegration Panel (RI). The CAR panel provides financial support to individual researchers who want to resume research in Europe after a career break, while the RI panel is dedicated to researchers who want to return to Europe to reintegrate in a longer term research position.

All Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions have a bottom-up approach, i.e. research fields are chosen freely by the applicants, and projects can range between 12-24 months. For more information, please see the Guide for Applicants and the Work Programme.

WHO CAN APPLY?

At the deadline for the submission of proposals (10/09/2015), researchers:

shall be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience;

the researcher must move or have moved from any country to the MS or AC where the beneficiary is located or;

the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals. Compulsory national service and/or Short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. As far as international European interest organisations (IEIO), the JRC or international organisations established in MSs or ACs are concerned, this rule does not apply to the hosting of the eligible researcher. However, the appointed researcher must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals in the same appointing organisation. This exception rule is applicable only for mobility TO such an organisation and NOT FROM it to any national host organisation;

In the Career Restart Panel (CAR) and Reintegration Panel (RI) the researcher must not have resided or carried out the main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organisation for more than 36 months in the 5 years immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals. For the RI, there shall also be mobility into the country of the Beneficiary. As far as IEIOs, the JRC or international organisations located in MSs or ACs are concerned, the Experienced Researcher must not have spent more than 36 months in the 5 years immediately prior to the deadline of submission of proposals in the same appointing organisation. This exception rule is applicable only for mobility TO such an organisation and NOT FROM it to any national host organisation.

FINANCIAL ASPECTS

Living allowance

€4,650 EUR per month - this refers to the basic, gross amount for the benefit of the researcher to be paid to the researcher in monthly instalments

Mobility allowance

In addition to the living allowance, a mobility allowance will be paid to recruited researchers: €600/month

Family allowance

€500/month family allowance will be paid in case the supported researcher has family obligations. In this context, family is defined as persons linked to the researcher (i) by marriage, or (ii) a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the legislation of the country were this relationship was formalised; or (iii) as dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher. The family status of a researcher will be determined at the deadline of the call (i.e.10 September 2015) and will not be revised during the lifetime of the action.

NB: The mobility and family allowances are fixed amounts, regardless of the country of recruitment, and may be taxable depending on the country in question.

APPLICATIONS: DOCUMENT TO BE SUBMITTED AND DEADLINES

Deadline of the next call for proposals for Marie Sklodowska–Curie Individual Fellowships is September 10th 2015.

NB: in order to avoid problems with the online system in the last weeks and work overload during the summer period, and to have the necessary time to support the online application process, the internal deadline for Expressions of Interest is 10th  August, 2015.
