The Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory (MNTL) is a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary research facility in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The laboratory currently contains 56,600 net square feet of assignable research space, including an 8,000 square foot Class 100 and Class 1000 clean room, and a 3,000 square foot lab complex designed for bionanotechnology research. Total research expenditures within MNTL are ~$13M/year, with an operating budget of ~$2.3M. MNTL supports theresearch projects of over 100 faculty members and over 350 graduate students across campus.

Faculty and students affiliated with the laboratory conduct research in thrusts that include Optoelectronics & Nanophotonics, Micro & Nanoelectronics, Nanomedicine & Bionanotechnology, and MEMS & Integrated Systems. The Director of the MNTL reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering and will provide overall leadership and direction of the Laboratory, its staff, and its research programs. The Director formulates strategic plans, prepares and implements the annual budget, oversees the administrative affairs of the Laboratory, and servesas principal spokesperson for the Laboratory. An important challenge for the new director will be to provide the leadership and long-term vision to leverage the capabilities of the MNTL, with the broad expertise in the electronic, optical, MEMS/NEMS, materials, devices, bio, circuits and systems which exist on the campus as well as outside the campus. The Director oversees the various research facilities in the Laboratory, and, in cooperation with the faculty affiliated with the MNTL, solicits partnerships and funding from industry and government.

Candidates must be eligible to hold a tenured full Professor position within the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois. They must have a proven record of accomplishments in science and engineering research, teaching, and leadership, as well as a substantial record of acquiring support for research and administering research programs. Candidates must show evidence of strong entrepreneurial, collaborative, administrative, andcommunication skills in order to effectively interact with college and campus administration, faculty, staff, and students.

Qualified senior candidates may also be considered for tenured full Professor positions as part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative, which is backed by a $100-million gift from the Grainger Foundation. Over the next few years, more than 35 new endowed professorships and chairs will be established, which will provide incredible opportunities for world-renowned researchers. The Director position is an administrative position accompanied by a full-time, tenured Professor appointment with full University benefits.
