The research is focused on the understanding of the basic processes involved in the heterogeneous nucleation of bubbles. During the three years, the project is aimed at modeling the nucleation process on both kind of natural and synthetic surfaces at different scales, ranging from the nano/microscopic to the macroscopic one. Technically, Molecular Dynamics simulations combined with rare events techniques and free-energy methods are envisaged as the main investigation tools at the nano scale, whereas continuum descriptions (thermodynamic and kinetic models) will be employed to deal with the micro scales features of nucleation in view of matching the macroscopic aspects of cavitation.
