4 full-time positions in the rank of full professor (hoogleraar) or senior full professor (gewoon hoogleraar) will be available at Ghent University with effect from 1 October 2015.

The 4 posts may be filled in any field of study.

The new academic staff members will be granted the privilege of focusing primarily on research for a period of 5 years. During that time the teaching load is limited to no more than 8 credits per semester on average over a period of 3 years. Subsequently, the time devoted to education, research and service to society may be altered by the university management.

A full-time position at the entry level of (senior) full professor implies a permanent position, although an initial probationary period may be required in accordance with article 91 of the university decree.

The rank will be decided by the university board, depending on the specific profile of the selected candidate.

Profile
  • you do not yet have a full-time professorial position (ZAP position) at Ghent University
  • candidates must be setting up an ERC Advanced Grant by the European Research Council as a result of the call ERC-2014-AdG launched on the ERC website on 17 June 2014, with Ghent University acting as host institution.
  • hold a PhD degree with doctoral thesis or a degree recognized as equivalent, and have at least two years of post-doctoral research experience by 1 October 2015;
  • have carried out excellent research in the field of study concerned, which is proven by research output of a high level in peer-reviewed international publications (journals and/or books);
  • have extensive experience in supervising research and coaching Ph.D. students;
  • possess the necessary didactic, organisational and communication skills for teaching at an academic level;
  • international research experience will be an advantage, in particular scientific work in research institutions abroad.

Applicants should measure up to the language proficiency as mentioned in Article II.270 of the Codex of higher education. The administrative and teaching language used at Ghent University is Dutch, but in case one doesn’t speak Dutch, it is also possible to apply. In accordance with the codex, in case the candidate has an education assignment, one should have proficiency in the language in which one teaches. This means that the candidate needs to have proficiency on an ERK-level (European Reference for languages) C1. Even if a candidate with an education assignment, isn’t teaching a training component in Dutch, one should have proficiency in the Dutch language on an ERK-level B2. One should meet the requirements within 3 years after the recruitment or appointment. In case of a first appointment, the candidate who does not yet meet the required level Dutch, can be appointed temporarily as a member of the professorial staff by the university board for a period of maximum 3 years. This may subsequently lead to a permanent position without a new vacancy if the university board positively evaluates the performance, including the achievement of the required level of Dutch, of the person involved.
