As part of a new initiative in building capacity for integrated materials design, applicants are invited to apply for two postdoctoral positions available in the research group of Prof Sean Smith at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

The successful candidates will join an interdisciplinary theoretical and computational research team led by Sean Smith, who has recently joined UNSW, and will enjoy collaborations with strong experimental groups. Professor Smith’s team focuses on integrated computational modelling approaches to the discovery, design and development of nanostructured materials for a range of applications in the areas of optoelectronics, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and nanobiotechnologies.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellows will undertake collaborative and self-directed research compatible with the project’s aims. These include but are not limited to: (i) predict and understand the potential of designed nanoarchitectures to modify and optimize molecular pathways in complex nanobio systems;  ii) better understand fundamental mechanisms in electrocatalytic processes; iii) develop new approaches to efficiently promote photocatalytic and photoelectrochemically driven reactions. Extensive skills in molecular dynamics, coarse grained dynamics, kinetic monte carlo modelling or computational fluid dynamics are all valuable in this context.

The positions are fixed term, full-time and are funded initially for up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance during the probationary period.

Applicants must have completed a PhD in a relevant engineering or science discipline; high level skills in theoretical and computational materials and molecular modelling; excellent computing and communications skills; an excellent publication record in a relevant area, relative to opportunity; and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a research team.
