Viruses to help storing solar power

A solar battery operation is based on the light getting on the photosensitive surface characterised with a “redundancy” of electrons, the latter start shifting into the next in-depth layer of the battery made of “electron-poor” materials. The electromotive force occurs which leads to the emergence of electric current. In fact the two layers interact as electrodes of a regular battery.

Search for materials fit to make solar batteries is of great interest for researchers. Materials…

PhD topic: Biological Responses to Nanoscale Particles (in German)

When exposed to biological fluids such as blood plasma, nanoparticles adsorb proteins and other biomolecules from the fluid. The adsorption is a dynamic process. The composition of the so-called protein corona depends on the respective concentrations of the proteins in the fluid and on their affinities to the nanoparticles. Understanding the structural and dynamic properties of the corona at the molecular level is necessary to use nanoparticles safely in industry or nanomedicine.…

A hands-on review of the world's first organic-solar-cell powered flashlight

The Organic Electronics Association (OEA) recently released their latest OE brochure, to which they attached a very cool demonstrator - an organic solar cell (PV) powered flashlight.

What feels like a bit of cardboard actually contains a a roll-to-roll printed organic solar cell, a flexible lithium-ion battery and a printed electronic circuitry. And of course a small white LED. The association says that this can "give you the feeling" of the next generation of electronics: thin,… Continue

MBN Explorer - an advanced program for simulating molecular and nanostructured materials

We are seeking a candidate student to work on the development of a multi-purpose computer code MesoBioNano Explorer (MBN Explorer). This computer program was originally developed to study molecular systems of varied level of complexity. In particular, MBN Explorer is suited to compute the system's energy, to optimize structures, as well as to simulate the molecular dynamics. MBN Explorer allows using a broad variety of interatomic potentials, to model different molecular systems, such as atomic… Continue
