I am not sure regarding toxicity of iron particles. In any case you can find the methods to protect such particles against oxidation. See for example the next papers:

I think polymer coating could be a best option to reduce toxicity.
Recently it has been reported that more than 100microgram is required to induce some toxicity in various cell lines.
you can try dextran, peg or silane ..

Could you suggest some papers on the bio compatibility study of carbon coated magnetic nanoparticles.I have magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated by fullerenes and i am looking forward to use this for some bio applications.
