FOR STUDENTS NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY:
" Students interested in applying to the IGERT Nanomedicine Program must first be accepted into one of the Northeastern University participating departments (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) according to the regular guidelines of that department. Accepted students may then apply separately to the IGERT Program. Students should indicate in their departmental application letters that they are interested in joining the IGERT program. Alongside departmental applications, students should send a resume, most recent transcripts and 1 page proposal detailing interest in the IGERT interdisciplinary program to Rita Kaderian the address below. Please note that acceptance into a Northeastern University program does not guarantee acceptance into the IGERT Nanomedicine Program".

" Distinguished Professor of Physics Srinivas Sridhar, who is also vice provost for research, is the principal investigator and director of the new program. The co-principal investigators are Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Science Mansoor Amiji (Associate Director), Professor of Chemical Engineering Gilda Barabino, Associate Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Sanjeev Mukerjee, and Professor of Chemistry Mary Jo Ondrechen. The project will also include collaborations with investigators from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Massachusetts General Hospital, and scientists from companies such as Genzyme and Boston Scientific".
"Nanomedicine is a new interdisciplinary paradigm emerging from the timely convergence of two parallel recent developments ñ the decoding of the human genome that has led to greater understanding of the molecular basis of medicine and biology, and nanotechnology, which offers the means to control molecular interactions," Sridhar says. "As a result of this program and funding, we anticipate significant research breakthroughs in cellular biosensors for cancer diagnostics, magnetic bio-control, targeted drug delivery and mitochondrial gene delivery for cancer therapy, bio-nano machines and nanomanufacturing."
