survey training needs Nano2All dialogue

Dear NanoPaprika member,

NANO2ALL (www.nano2all.eu) is a project funded by the European Commission, under the framework of Horizon2020 (H2020) programme. It aims to facilitate a dialogue between scientists, businesses, governments, media, civil society organisation and citizens to discuss the important issues which arise from the use of nanotechnologies. NANO2ALL will also collect and share knowledge, tools and best practices of responsible nanotechnology research and innovation. The results of these activities will help the adoption of a more responsible nanotechnology research and innovation (R&I) in Europe both at the level of governance and R&I conduction.

Among its activities, NANO2ALL aims to assess and increase the knowledge of the different societal groups about concepts, like nanotechnologies, responsible research and innovation, as well as techniques for exploring future scenarios and for stakeholder engagement in research, development and innovation, among others.  In this view, we are now requesting you to kindly please fill out an online survey that helps us learn about your knowledge about such concepts and techniques. We would like to learn more about what you (and other stakeholders like yourself) already know about nanotechnology and responsible research and innovation (RRI).

Please fill out the online survey that should take maximum 5 minutes of your precious time: http://nano2all.eu/survey/general-audience.

Please kindly note that, your personal details will be treated carefully and confidentially, and will not be shared without your prior written consent. Please see the Nano2all informed consent form at the bottom of the survey.

We would greatly appreciate your response by June 10, 2016.

You are more than welcome to contact us if you have any questions / comments. Please contact Dr. Ineke Malsch: postbus@malsch.demon.nl

Kind regards,

The NANO2ALL team

This survey respects the EU Data Protection Directive. By completing this survey, you consent to the use of your responses in anonymised form in the report D2.2: “Online Training Needs Survey Report”, which will be published in the Nano2All platform (www.nano2all.eu). Should you request, we can send you a copy of your survey response and give you the chance to comment on the report before publication. We will not store or preserve your data longer than 6 months. Only the staff carrying out the processing of your information will have access to your data. Please register for Developing Nanotechnology Curricula to Meet Industry Needs on Jul 6, 2015 10:00 AM CEST at:

https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3343330453991988737

Nanotechnology industry creats a demand for a well-qualified workforce. Therefore, there is a need for nanotechnology curricula, developed as a response to the demands of the industry. The EU funded NanoEIS project identified that the industry needs and expectations do not much the content of the university curricula. A model curriculum will be discussed by Dr. Dorota Rutkowska-Zbik, Institute of Catalysis, PAS, Krakow Poland.

Dear colleague,

Please sign up for the webinar on Tuesday 24 February, 14.00-17.00 Central European Time here: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/616543813129064961

The focus of this webinar is on improving the connection between tertiary education in nanotechnology and the needs of the labour market. Project coordinator Prof. Dr Albert Duschl will present preliminary findings of and a draft model curriculum developed in the NanoEIS project www.nanoeis.eu, funded by the EU. We will then invite your contributions on improving employer involvement in tertiary education in nanotechnology as input to the NanoEIS model curriculum, as well as on relevant modules for company internal training in nanotechnology. The outcomes of the workshop will be used to improve the deliverables of the NanoEIS project. We hope that the information presented and the interaction with your fellow participants will also be useful and interesting for you.

Kind regards,

Ineke Malsch

Physics for Development gets boost

Physicists from Africa, Asia, Latin America and of course Europe enthusiastically exchanged ideas during the 1st conference on Physics for Development organised by the European Physical Society, 11-12 October in Brussels www.epsphysicsfordevelopment.org

I gave a presentation on my experiences in international nanotechnology cooperation with Latin America since 2004. This presentation can be downloaded from my website: http://www.ethicschool.nl/_files/IntnanocoopEULA.pdf

A survey among recipients of the EthicSchool e-learning DVD shows that there is interest in an EthicSchool summerschool in 2013. There appears to be a slight preference for an on-site school of 1 week in September 2013 on Ethics of Emerging Technologies. The coming months we will look for financial and materials support to facilitate such a summerschool. Suggestions are welcome.

Read the summary of the survey results in the first EthicSchool newsletter.

Nanotechnology, Peace and Security

Nanotechnology is a key enabling technology that offers potential security threats as well as solutions to global challenges. While escaping the control of any individual government on its own, nanotechnology could be governed in international multi-stakeholder cooperation involving states, the scientific community, industry and civil society. Such cooperation should promote peaceful applications, not just defend against perceived threats to nanosecurity."

This is the conclusion of my invited lecture during the Global Futures Forum workshop on Transformational Technologies in Rome, 17-18 September. This well-received intervention was based on my PhD-thesis on Ethics and Nanotechnology and the article onThe Just War and the ethical governance of research.
