"Spicy world of NanoScience"
Gold nanoparticles can easily be conjugated by more than one functional biomolecule, in particular if the nanoparticle is initially "naked" (ligand-free). Because of partial oxidation of gold surface atoms, the particle attracts electron donors, which adsorb and self-assemble. Any electron donative group works, but a terminal thiol group works best for anchoring on gold. Here, a cell penetrating peptide (positive backbone, animated green) and a targeting vector (nucleic acid, negative backbone, animated blue) are conjugated to the gold nanoparticle. This bivalent bioconjugate could be designed to penetrate into cells and target certain gene sequence of the chromosome inside the nucleus.

yes, of course. The protocol was published in an Open Access Journal, and there is another detail on the langth of the biomolecule spacer that you would have to consider for optimal conjugation efficiency.
Here the two references:

Comment by Dr. Stephan Barcikowski on June 18, 2012 at 9:50am Dear Navin Jain,
it is an Animation based on experimental results (Open access Publication: Barchanski, A. ; Sajti, C. L. ; Sehring, C. ; Petersen, S. ; BARCIKOWSKI, S.: Design of Bi-functional Bioconjugated Gold Nanoparticles by Pulsed Laser Ablation with Minimized Degradation. The animation software was run by Martin Langhammer (http://www.youtube.com/user/FRONTSICHT).
Comment by Navin Jain on June 18, 2012 at 5:21am First of all, congrats for such a nice approach.
Is this study also includes in silico experiments??
Can you share the details of the software used for preparing the video???
Thanks in advance
Navin Jain
Comment by Dr. Stephan Barcikowski on June 17, 2012 at 10:12pm Often, only one function is not enough. Multivalent gold nanoparticle conjugates combine two functions. Here: the cationic peptide helps translocating the cell membrane and the oligonucleotide allows binding to gene sequence inside the nucleus.
Welcome! Nanopaprika was cooked up by Hungarian chemistry PhD student in 2007. The main idea was to create something more personal than the other nano networks already on the Internet. Community is open to everyone from post-doctorial researchers and professors to students everywhere.
There is only one important assumption: you have to be interested in nano!
