Within the Faculty of Science & Technology (TNW) at the University of Twente, some 700 staff members and more than 1100 students are involved in training and research areas spanning chemical technology, biomedical technology, and applied physics. Fields of application include sustainable energy, materials science, technical medicine and nanotechnology. The research enjoys a high profile in the Netherlands as well as abroad and is coordinated within the world-class multidisciplinary research institutes MIRA and MESA+. The faculty collaborates intensively with industrial and academic partners world-wide, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funding agencies.
Catalysis research at the University of Twente and in the MESA+ institute for nanotechnology has traditionally focused on oxidation catalysis, biomass conversion, and liquid phase processes (Catalytic Processes and Materials group (CPM, Lefferts)). More recently, the institute has broadened the scope, focusing on i) photon and electron stimulated catalytic processes (Photocatalytic Synthesis group (PCS, Mul), and ii) fundamentals and engineering of interfaces, based on expertise on soft matter and fluidics (SFI, Lammertink). All three groups share the ambition to develop improved catalytic processes on the basis of fundamental understanding of structure-activity correlations and transport phenomena; the groups provide excellent infrastructure for preparation, characterization and testing of catalysts and catalytic devices. In addition, the MESA+ Nanolab has world-class facilities to very precisely synthesize catalytically functionalized surfaces. Lithography, Pulsed Laser Deposition, Atomic Layer Deposition, and Reactive Sputtering are examples of these facilities.
We seek to expand the catalysis research efforts of the MESA+ Institute and invite applications for a:
TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN Catalysis by nano-engineered materials AND DEVICES

Description

You are a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher with a PhD degree in catalysis or catalytic reactor engineering, with excellent experimental and project management skills. Several years of (international) experience as postdoctoral researcher, and a high-level publication record are a prerequisite. You can contribute to excellence in at least one of the following catalysis associated research domains: i) nano-structuring of catalytic devices, ii) catalyst performance characterization by molecular spectroscopy (UV/Vis, Raman, Infrared), and/or iii) catalyst performance characterization by flow and concentration visualization techniques, including micro-PIV and fluorescence microscopy. You are excited by solving fundamental research questions, and inspired by the prospect of creating catalytic materials and devices with ground breaking performance in applications such as water and gas purification, conversion of biomass, or activation of CO2, H2O and alkanes. One of your main challenges will be to smartly integrate catalyst and reactor design, in particular for catalyst activation by alternative stimuli (light, electrons). Bridging the inorganic chemistry/catalysis disciplines with (micro)reactor- and process engineering will be necessary to achieve your goal of assembly of highly efficient, innovative catalytic materials and devices.
You are expected to develop a strong externally funded research line that complements the existing expertise and infrastructure of the catalysis groups. You must be committed to teach relevant (under)graduate catalysis and engineering courses, and supervise students in the disciplines of chemical engineering and/or materials science.
