TEM Analysis of an Metal Oxide Nanocrystal

Does anyone help me to find out the best Dispersion Solvent for TEM Analysis of  metal Oxide nano crystals. When i work with Ethanol it forms a network but with Acetone oxide layer forms. What i want to know is there any polymer or such solvents which will help me to get a well dispersed pattern of my powder sample.

  • it may be the process you adopted for the synthesis giving you the morphology what you probably seeing in TEM. Did you did SEM?

If you have doubt using ethanol use DI water then but it will take a bit long to dry so place the grid between two glass slide and dry using conventional table lamp.

  • why hexane?
  • Ok my problem with ethanol is, it  forms network with the nanoparticle forming rode like structure.thats why ethanol found unsuitable
  • Hi the problem is not with the solvent.

    1. disperse your samples in ethanol

    2. Sonicate for few seconds

    3. let big particles settle down for few seconds

    4. Hold the grid using a twizer in air

    5. pick a drop from the upper portion of the solvent using pipet

    6. hold the grid very carefuly and without much presurre

    7. place a drop wait until it get dried then place a drop or two more and let it dry in air

    8. Then you are all set

  • U can try clear dispersion of the nanocrystallite sample in hexane and put drops of it on a carbon-coated copper grid to get TEM image.
